This milestone achievement marks a pivotal moment in our mission to foster a highly skilled and innovative workforce that drives economic growth and success in the region.
Brick and Block Careers is pleased to have received the funding grant. This has facilitated the hiring of an Industry Engagement officer as well as increased marketing in South Australia.
Brick and Block Careers seeks to prepare workers for economic growth and jobs in the building and construction industry; and to grow, extend, and assist the sector by providing job opportunities in brick and blocklaying. The full-time officer will help to expand brick and block laying job possibilities throughout South Australia, hence supporting Brick and Block Manufacturers.
The funding will be utilised to support and expand a diverse range of apprenticeship opportunities, bridging the gap between education and employment. It demonstrates a shared commitment to nurturing talent, reducing youth unemployment, and promoting sustainable economic development.
Brick and Block Careers has been at the forefront of advocating for apprenticeships as a vital pathway to address the evolving demands of the workforce. This funding will allow us to expand the reach of more young talents to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in a competitive job market. ]]>The post What Is The Difference Between Brick Veneer And Double Brick appeared first on Australian Brick and Blocklaying Training Foundation Ltd (ABBTF).
]]>Two of the most popular materials used in Australia are brick veneer and double brick. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, and it’s essential to understand the differences between them before making a decision.
There are several differences between the brick veneer and double brick and this information from the experts at Brick & Block Careers will help you determine which one is right for a project.
Brick veneer is a type of construction that consists of a single layer of bricks that are placed against a timber or steel frame. The frame supports the weight of the roof and upper floors, while the brick layer is attached to the frame using wall ties. The gap between the brick layer and frame is filled with insulation material to improve the thermal performance of the wall.
Double brick is a type of construction that consists of two layers of bricks that are placed one on top of the other, with a cavity between them. The cavity is typically filled with insulation material to improve the thermal performance of the wall. Double brick construction is a popular choice for residential and commercial buildings in Australia due to its durability and fire-resistant properties.
To determine whether your property is brick veneer or double brick, you may use the following methods:
If you’re still unsure, try contacting a professional inspector or structural engineer to check your property’s construction. They can provide a more accurate judgement based on their experience and may use tools such as borescopes to investigate wall cavities.
During your bricklayers’ apprenticeship, you will learn more about things like the difference between the brick veneer and double brick. The choice between the brick veneer and double brick for a building project depends on a variety of factors such as budget, location, personal preferences, and design requirements. Brick veneer is a more cost-effective option that can still provide excellent thermal performance and sound insulation.
Double brick, on the other hand, offers superior durability, fire resistance, and sound insulation, but at a higher cost. It is important to weigh the pros and cons of each option and determine the best choice for your specific project needs.
If you want to become a professional bricklayer, you need to have a sound foundation and that is where we come in. For information on bricklayers apprenticeship, call Brick & Block Careers at 1300 66 44 96. You can also send us your requirements and queries through this online form and we will revert soon.

Our very own Dean Pearson (Brick and Block Careers – WA Manager) wins an award for his valued contribution to WorldSkills Australia!
“This award essentially acknowledges our continued support for the competition and everything it stands for. To represent all our employees, both past and present, who have at various points in time made significant contributions to WorldSkills Australia, I have accepted the honour.
Since 2006, I have worked with WorldSkills Australia to make sure it serves as a venue for the development, assessment, and celebration of exceptional young Bricklaying Apprentices. It complements our business strategy and offers a plethora of opportunities to us.
The competition has played a significant part in highlighting outstanding role models for our trade; many of them have gone on to achieve even greater success as tradesmen, tradeswomen, business owners, contractors, and industry leaders. I am very honoured to receive this award and have worked with so many equally passionate people”. Dean says.
The WA Bricklaying WorldSkills Australia committee was established in 2008. The common interest was to ensure that these events are held in the best light possible with the best apprentices available. This has created new business partnerships; many remain in place today. It also demonstrates that our industry is strong and in good hands.
WorldSkills Australia strongly believes that skills drive the future of young people and Australia. Since 1981, WSA has championed skills excellence in vocational, technological, and service-oriented careers and helped over 100,000 people compete in national and international skill competitions. We’re passionate because skills grow careers, foster life-long partnerships, and build successful communities!
Brick and Block Careers aims to fulfil career aspirations of young Australians and job seekers, by providing employment opportunities in brick and blocklaying.

]]>We now have a high percentage of younger bricklayers in Australia. Having younger bricklayers in the workforce can help ensure a steady supply of skilled workers for the future and can facilitate succession planning for aging workers.
Brick and Block Careers is attracting younger candidates to start an apprenticeship and as a result, the average age of bricklayers has decreased.
In recent years, there has been a steady increase in demand for bricklayers in Australia, particularly in the residential construction sector where there has been a large rise in the building of new homes.
A change in Brick and Block Careers strategy has captured these incentives and we have been able to capitalise on the situation. “BRICKLAYING AS A CAREER OF CHOICE” concentrate on targeting schools and career teachers at the levels for Years 9-12, along with developing target marketing and educational material to promote the benefits of brick and blocklaying as a career path.
As a result, bricklaying has grown in popularity in Australia, where it provides qualified employees with promising career prospects and competitive pay scales. It is worth noting that the construction industry has been a major contributor to the Australian economy and has seen growth in recent years.
Our history!

Victorian Brick & Blocklaying Training Foundation Ltd (VBBTF) was established in June 2003 following a request from the Clay Brick & Paver Association of Victoria, representing brick and block manufacturers, for a levy funded scheme to be put in place to address the shortage of competent bricklayers in Victoria.
In January 2006, the name was changed to Australian Brick & Blocklaying Training Foundation Ltd (ABBTF). A new Board was appointed, and the Victorian business model was rolled out to all States as ABBTF, starting with the consolidation of Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory. In 2007 Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania were added to the group and operations commenced nationally.
In April 2022, the company adopted a new trading name – Brick and Block Careers.
By providing support in key areas, including apprentice retention and mentoring support for both the employer and the apprentice, Brick and Block Careers continues to assist the industry in preparing for current and future demand for quality bricklaying tradesmen and women.
